Sometimes if pays to check your spam folder on the old business account and this was one of those times. I was invited to attend Midwest Fest directly (a convention which i guess has a name rebrand and one i had not heard of).
As always when i go to a convention i try to take something with me as a lesson learned and this one was no exception. As far as conventions go it was tiny and very much geared towards the console gaming crowd, which as you can tell i am not a creator for. So what did this teach me?
- Overlap in the spheres can happen.
- Console gamers are less likely to want the Storyteller tools and campaign settings that i have to offer.
- Overhead was a worry for a majority of the convention.
- For a small convention like this i was lucky to make back my table fees, especially considering the convention base.
- I won’t be going back to a convention that small with that big of an overhead unless its geared directly to my content.
- I did some cross-promo and convention connection with other vendors and honestly that was one of the biggest pieces to help drive sales of my content.
- I handed out art prints to other vendors and business cards and had the old conversations here and there.
- I made some solid connections in both the professional sphere and charity spheres.
I know that’s a meandering list but its all important to show that a convention may not be the best for your sales/content/influence but you can meet and make some good contacts, just make sure you are not putting yourself and a disadvantage in doing it.
Till next time this is John aka Mr. Biscuits
